Affiliate Marketing UTM Setup: Maximizing Commissions

Affiliate marketing is a game of margins. If you're spending $100 on ads to make $110 in commissions, you need to know exactly which ads are profitable. UTM tracking is the difference between a successful business and a expensive hobby.

For affiliate marketers, the "Source" is usually where you're promoting (e.g., your blog or a specific forum), and the "Campaign" is the specific product you’re selling. Let’s dive into the optimal setup.

Tracking Source vs. Sub-ID

Most affiliate networks (like Amazon Associates or ShareASale) have their own internal tracking IDs. While these are great for the network, they don't help you understand your data in GA4. By using UTMs in addition to your affiliate link extras, you can track the entire funnel from traffic source to sale.

Setup for Affiliate Blogs

If you're running a review site, you should track which specific articles are driving the most clicks. For every "Buy Now" button, use this structure:

This allow you to see exactly which product reviews are your most valuable assets. You can read more about this strategy in our guide on calculating content marketing ROI.

The Importance of "Sub-Campaigns"

Many affiliate marketers run paid traffic on Facebook or Instagram. In these cases, you need to be extremely granular. Use utm_content to track different versions of your ad creative. If ad A converts at 5% and ad B converts at 1%, you need to know that immediately to save your budget.

Don't Forget the Basics

Because affiliate links are often cluttered with multiple parameters, it's easy to make a mistake. Always remember to check your UTM best practices. And remember: since these are external links (to the affiliate network), it’s perfectly safe to use UTMs on them—unlike internal links on your own site.

Scaling Your Affiliate Business

As you grow from one product to fifty, you'll need to move into bulk UTM generation. Keeping your links organized in a central database or spreadsheet is the only way to maintain a professional affiliate operation at scale.

UTM Builder Tool

UTM Builder Tool is a free UTM tag generator that helps marketers create clean, consistent campaign URLs for Google Analytics 4 and HubSpot. It was built as a simpler alternative to the official Google Campaign URL Builder and HubSpot tracking URL builder — no login, no upsells, just accurate links.
