QR Codes and UTMs: Tracking the Physical World
For years, "offline" marketing was a dark hole. You’d print 10,000 brochures, hand them out at a trade show, and have no idea if a single person actually visited your website as a result. QR codes changed that—but only if you use them with UTMs.
Combining QR codes with proper UTM parameters allows you to bring digital-level tracking to billboards, flyers, and business cards.
The Goal: Identifying Offline Sources
If someone scans a plain QR code to yoursite.com, they show up in Google Analytics as
"Direct" traffic. You can't distinguish them from someone who just typed your URL into their browser. By
adding UTMs, you can see precisely which physical asset drove the visit.
The Perfect QR Tracking Structure
When creating a QR code for a physical item, use this setup:
- utm_source:
offlineorprint - utm_medium: The type of asset (e.g.,
billboard,brochure,tradeshow-flyer) - utm_campaign: The specific event or location (e.g.,
vegas-expo-2024)
Pro Tip: Keep the URL Short
The more data you put in a QR code, the "busier" and more complex the code becomes. This can make it harder for older phones to scan. To solve this, generate your long UTM link using our UTM Builder, then use a link shortener to create a redirected short link. Use that short link to generate your QR code.
Real-World Examples
- Business Cards: Give everyone on your sales team a QR code with
utm_content=sales-rep-name. - Direct Mail: Track which neighborhoods respond best by using different UTM campaigns for different zip codes.
- Restaurant Menus: See which table locations or seasonal inserts drive the most orders by tagging individual codes.
Why Accuracy Matters Offline
Unlike digital ads, you can't "edit" a printed brochure once it's in a customer's hand. Following UTM best practices is even more critical here—double-check your spelling and your links before you hit "print"! One typo in an offline UTM can ruin the data for the entire print run.
